Q-Lite modem adds mobility support
November 8, 2016
The Q-Lite Compact modem now supports the Open Antenna Modem Interface Protocol (OpenAMIP) protocol, facilitating the exchange of data between compliant antenna control units (ACUs) and Paradise satellite modems. This allows the modem to support mobility applications that utilise GEO/MEO/LEO HTS satellites and require automated beam switching.
Spot beams cover smaller areas than traditional widebeam transponders and mobile users may pass through several beams on their journey. Overlapping beams use different frequencies and polarisations and it may also be necessary to do load balancing over multiple beams due to traffic patterns, local rain fades. etc. Fast automated beam switching is therefore a 'must have'.
Colin Mackay, VP of Engineering (Satellite Modems) commented: 'Satellite connectivity has got a lot more complicated in recent times with the increasing use of HTS satellites and MEO constellations, not to mention the strong interest in LEO satellite projects. This has created various challenges including the need for fast, intelligent, automated beam switching as part of overall bandwidth pool management. It is important for our modems to be able to interact with the user's choice of ACU and satellites such that everything works without requiring user intervention. And we've now established an important baseline in that respect that we can build on for the future.'
The Q-Lite is a compact satellite modem that is available both as an OEM product for designing into custom enclosures and as an off-the-shelf modem. It supports the new highly-efficient DVB-S2X standard along with a comprehensive suite of embedded IP features that dramatically increase bandwidth efficiency and provide sophisticated traffic management.
Existing users of our flagship Q-Flex satellite modem can also benefit from OpenAMIP support via a software upgrade. Please contact Technical Support for more details.
